Every class at Bujinkan North Brisbane always starts with Taihenjutsu studies. Ukemi can vary from class to class, from kneeing, sitting one knee, standing or even with weapons.

In this class we incorporate Sanshin Kata in the study of one technique. We start with the very basic of that one technique. After the structure of the technique has been understood we add small pieces to enable the technique to come alive.

The group then includes into the same technique punchs and kicks to soften the opponent. When applying these strikes, we study correct targeting and positioning to gain the maximum affect with minimum effeort. This is thanks to the use of Sanshin Kata.

After playing with this technqiue for some time, using balance breaking and striking, we then bring into the technique weapons. These weapons are generally used in close quarters and usually are Sword, knife, Naginata, Hibuki(hidden weapons), Shuriken, Bo (6ft stick)hanbo (3ft stick) or Ningu (ninja tools).

This way of training and studying allows all members to receive muscle memory, and a higher level of skill.

Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings we will be studying Naginata, Nagamaki and Bisento (Halberd) for the next six months to one year. We are focusing on strong foundations of the Naginata for the first few months. After the initial few months, each member is able to move and position themselves freely with the strength of the fundementals. The freedom enables variations to form and flow with no effort or hesitation.

Bujinkan Guidelines

Monday night class

Monday nights are dedicated to studying the foundations of the Bujinkan. The group first starts with Taihenjustu. This can be from leaping, break falling, rolling from various stances, cartwheels, handsprings and flips (front & back). Taihenjustu is important for safety and when more advanced, countering techniques are possible.

We then move on to practising Sanshin Kata, Basic punching, kicking and various striking combinations. The group sometimes uses focus pads to generate true power and distancing skills.

The class then plays with the basic forms of ground restraints, chokes, stranges or throws.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 252px; height: 230px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JiNdRlWSRGA/S689Qbu_UAI/AAAAAAAAAB4/u2G5HapEECo/s320/nage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453645026301005826" />
After everybody catchs their breath, Kihon Happo is practised in the correct form. Kihon Happo is the eight basic forms of taijutsu. These eight forms are where all our techniques stem from.

Monday nights are different from Wednesday and Saturdays, as we study and practise sword. We will be study basic sword, muto dori (taking the sword without/ sword disarming techniques), Daisho (two swords/ short sword and long sword), Ninja Biken (Ninja sword), Iai (sword drawing), and Shinken Shiraha Dome (sword stopping techniques/ seated positions).Once a week, each student will gain the basic foundation of various sword techniques and disarms.

Monday nights are not just for beginners, they are aimed at all levels and grades. He was sixteen years old at the time. He trained there for several months before the school closed it's doors.

This closure didn't stop his passion for Budo. He went onto study in the kickboxing gym, The Fight Centre. The training there was three times a week, but after training there for one year, the gym closed also.

While searching for a new club, Andrew trained with a Chinese Boxing group and also trained in a Western Boxing club for a short period of time.

After training in many different martial halls,he thought more deeply about what he wanted from his training. In search of something more traditional, he found the Dojo of Aikido Brisbane Aiki-Kai. Andrew studied there several times a week, morning and evenings. The type of training was more suitable as it was realistic, multi attackers and weapons. The feeling of combat training was missing, so he continued to search again.

He found the Bujinkan Dojo Strathpine of Jason Taylor. Andrew became a dedicated student of the Strathpine Dojo. He religiously trained three times a week, twice a week privately, and once in the Dojo. After almost two years of training the Strathpine Dojo too closed.

Andrew didn't stop training as he found two Bujinkan Dojo's on the west side. He found the Bujinkan Dojo Chelmer of Peter Duffy and the Bujinkan Dojo Auchenflower of Duncan Mitchell. These two Dojo's had different training nights and days. This enable Andrew to train five times a week between both the Chelmer Dojo and the Auchenflower Dojo.

Andrew decided to advance his training even more, so in 2003 he travelled to Japan for the first. While in Japan he trained with Hatsumi Sensei and the leading Shihan (masters). Andrew studied with Nagato Sensei, Naguchi Sensei, Seno Sensei, Shiraishi Sensei, Oguri Sensei, Someya Sensei and Hosoda Sensei.

Hungry for more skills and knowledge, Andrew has returned to Japan every year to train and study from the masters. On returning from Japan in 2005, Andrew established his own study group, Bujinkan Dojo North Brisbane. This new study group enable Andrew to focus more on what he wanted and need to study, advancing and polishing his on skills. He is currently ranked 10th Dan

His martial studies are complemented with more then fourteen years in the security industry.

Bujinkan Guidelines

Training

Our study group emphasizes on the natural movement of Taijutsu (body skill). The use of distancing, timing and a relaxed body is emphasized in every class. The Sanshin Kata is of high importance in our training hall, as it's the foundation of Taijutsu.

We incorporate Dakentaijutsu (striking skills) with this soft, relaxed feeling to generate true and natural power from the whole body.

With these two elements we bring into our studies Jutaijutsu, which is the use of joint locks, throws, strangles and chokes. The study of these three core structures, we can the apply true control of an adversary.

The most important and highly stressed skilled is Taihenjutsu (rolling, falling and leaping). Taihenjutsu is for the saftey of every student in every day life. We study Ukemi to ahve the freedom to fall and counter techniques without pain or fear of the fall.

After all the fundamentals are practised, we move onto multi attacks, unarmed and armed. These armed attacks maybe with various weapons from various positions.

Bujinkan has various weapons on which we examine in depth. These weapons include, Bojutsu (6ft stick), Hanbojutsu (3ft stick), Kenjutsu (sword), Daisho (two swords), Sojutsu (Japanese Spear), Naginatajutsu (Halberd), Ningu (Ninja weapons & tools), Shurikenjutsu (throwing blades), Kusari (chain), Kusarigama (chain & sickle), Nawa (rope), Tessen (iron fan), Jutte (old truncheon), Kakushi Buki (hidden weapons), Knife (knife).

My belief is that you should start from the bottom and slowly work your way to the top. The journey of BUDO is a long and winding path, walk it one step at a time.

This thought is played out in our Dojo, by starting as Foot Soldiers. Our main weapons are Yari (Spear), Bo (6ft stick), Naginata (Halberd), Kudachi (short sword) and Ken/Katana/Tachi (sword). These weapons allow our group to build a solid foundation, and then we may grow from Foot Soldiers into Officers.

The Bujinkan is not a sport or competition. All members of our class should give respect to each other in and outside of the Dojo.

Bujinkan Guideleines

Class times

Monday: 7pm to 9pm

Wednesday: 7pm to 9pm

Saturday: 8am to 10am (check schedule)

Costs: $10 per lesson or $65 per month.
(Monthly fees only valid for one month.
